Is it possible to correct your anterior pelvic tilt using an ergonomic chair?

The goal of today’s article is to answer this question, give you an in-depth understanding of the causes and ways you can address anterior pelvic tilt, and how sitting affects it.

What Is Anterior Pelvic Tilt?

Many people confuse Lower crossed syndrome with anterior pelvic tilt. Let us first clear this confusion:

Lower crossed syndrome (LCS), also known as Unterkreuz syndrome, is a condition occurred as a consequence of imbalances between muscles of the front and the back of our body.

This definition may sound a bit confusing, but the image below will help you understand it better (and explain how it got its name):
Lower crossed syndrome - anatomy
The condition is characterized by weak abdominal muscles and tight hip flexor at the front of the body; and tight hip extensors and weak gluteus in the back.

The result of this muscular imbalance is a pelvis tilted forward (anterior pelvic tilt), pronounced hip flexion and hyperlordosis in the lumbar spine (lumbar lordosis is a natural, forward-facing curve in the spine).

As you can see, the anterior pelvic tilt is just a manifestation of LCS and should be regarded as such.

Before we go on, we want to get one more point across. According to the data from National Health Institute (NHI), some 75-85% of all adults have anterior pelvic tilt, but it is mild and does not pose any health threats.

The pelvic tilt we are referring to in this article is a more apparent, observable curvature of the spine that is not normal.

Things To Consider When Buying A New Chair

Picking the right chair may seem like a difficult task. There are all these features you need to look into, so it is easy to get lost and eventually just get the one the seller recommends.

This can be a bit of a double-edged sword since, even though the seller wants to make his customer happy, only you know what works best for your body.

But before we start digging into various types of chairs on today`s market, we are going to go over a list of things you need to pay attention to, to make your purchase a complete success.

So, these are some of the things you need to pay attention to:

  • Adjustable seat height – for most chairs, this is a standard, built-in feature but I still feel the need to point it out since it is one of the most crucial components of a good chair.
  • Adjustable Armrests – this is a little more advanced feature, and it will probably raise the price of a chair, but it is crucial since adjusting the armrests will allow good support for your arms and ease the tension off your shoulders.
  • Adjustable backrest – I know you must be saying to yourself “Enough with the `adjustable`” but it is important to have as many “moving” parts as you can, so you can position yourself in your chair properly. You also need to make sure your backrest is wide enough and high enough to support you fully.
  • Lumbar back support – some chairs offer special, lumbar support which is an incredible asset if you are sitting for long periods of time and will prove beneficial in fighting anterior pelvic tilt.

These are some of the essential features you need to look for to when going on a hunt for your new chair, so keep them in mind. Now we are going to talk more about the specific types of chairs available today.

Office Ergonomic Chairs

Sometimes, well quite often actually, you will not be in a position to choose your office chair yourself, you will be forced to use whichever chair they give you.

If and when this happens, you need to make a choice, will you allow your spine to deteriorate and cause you back pain `till the rest of your career, or will you save up some money and get a proper chair.

If you decide to go with the first option, all we can say is good luck. For those of you who chose to buy yourself a chair, or managed to get the company to buy one for you, I have prepared a few more pointers and tips:

  • Think about what will you do the most while sitting in the chair
  • Always try out at least five models before deciding to buy
  • When you decide on a specific model you want, try looking for it in a few more shops and see if you can get a better deal
  • And, of course, choose the fabric you desire

Mesh Office Chair

Mesh chairs are my favorite, and after I give you some of the benefits of owning this chair, I`m sure you will grow to love them as well.

  1. They are incredibly durable – the fabric of these chairs is woven tightly so that they will keep their fresh, new look even after years of usage.
  2. They offer good ventilation – this is a neat feature especially for those long, hot summer days. The mesh will allow the air to flow and reduce perspiration.
  3. They are stylish – another common reason people buy them is that they simply look good, and I have to agree with that.
  4. They offer good support – at the end of the day, your back needs support, and this is the main criteria for choosing an ergonomic chair. As I`ve said earlier, the fabric is woven tightly and it will offer you good support and will not wear out as fast as the regular, upholstered chairs.

    Sitting With Anterior Pelvic Tilt

The problem with sitting is that many people don’t know how to do it properly. Let me say that again – most individuals aren’t even aware of their poor sitting posture habits, so there are times they are hurting their back instead of healing.

Let’s take anterior pelvic tilt as an example. People with this problem are aware of it, which is causing them to be mindful of their spinal alignment when they sit.

What happens then? They pull their shoulders backward, arch their back, and stick their but forward. By sticking your but forward, you are hurting yourself and making the pelvic tilt worse.

What you need to be doing is relaxing your lower back, and tightening your abdominal muscles.

Do that now! – Relax your lower back muscles and tighten your abdominals.

Did you feel your pelvis tilt backward slightly? – This is the position you should be sitting in!
