Farting is an entirely normal thing, everyone does it, even girls (yes, we said it). Though this might seem like a silly topic to write about, we’ve decided to give you a bit of a medical background on farting.

We will discuss the origin of the gasses in our body, how they are produced, why our farts smell so bad, why do other people’s farts smell worse than our own, which foods lead to the increased gas production and, of course, we will tell you a bit more about how to make yourself fart .

Facts About Gases – Farts

The medical term we use for a fart is flatulence. And the proper definition of flatulence is a constant stream of air coming out of our anus.

Whether you thought farting is polite or not, the reality is everyone does it. The doctors say an average person should have anywhere from 10 up to 22 farts per day. It may seem like a lot, but it just a normal bodily function which you might not even notice… Well, not at first anyway.

There is even a scientific discipline addressing flatulence, called flatology. It does sound strange I know, but you can do a quick google search, and you will be able to verify this information.

As for the smell, gasses in healthy individuals does not smell too strong, but it does have a definite smell as it comes out of our intestines. We’ll talk more about the actual smell of the fart later, but for now, we will speak of some of the leading causes of gas production within our body.

Here is the list of reasons responsible for gasses produced in our body:

  • Swelling – swelling in the intestines can lead to air blockage which can build up and eventually get released in the form of flatulence
  • Chewing – if you do not chew your food properly, the digestive system will have problems digesting it and will produce gas
  • Lactose intolerance – lactose intolerant people can fart more when compared to the others, especially if they drink milk
  • Foods you eat – there are some foods which will just produce more gases when digested, such as beans

Before going on, it is important to mention that you should consult your doctor if you are suffering from diarrhea and notice an increase in gas production. Same goes for fever.

Fart Noise and Volume

You probably asked yourself why are farts so loud. Well, they can come in various shapes, sizes and, of course, sounds. The sound we produce when we fart mostly depends on the amount of gas we have in our intestines at that time, and how tight the muscles around our anus are.

The gas builds up as a result of breathing, eating, swallowing and the digestion of food. These gases travel through the intestines and eventually leave our body… With a bang.

As we already said, the sound itself will depend on the amount of gas that has build up and how tight your anal sphincter is. If the sphincter is loose and relaxed, there will likely be no sound at all; but it the muscles around your anus are tight, you might shatter some windows, glasses or break the sound barrier.

Why Our Farts Smell?

Though the smell is almost always bad, it can be an indicator as to the condition of your health. If your fart smells like rotten eggs, chances are something is wrong; but the fart can smell bad for various reasons.

One of the most common reasons is the food you eat and the way you eat it. If you do not chew your food properly, your digestive system will not have the chance to digest it the way it should. Instead, you will be stuck with undigested pieces of food within your intestines that produce a foul smell.

When we fart, it’s not just one gas that comes out; it’s a “semi-lethal” combination comprised of:

  • Nitrogen
  • Oxygen
  • Methane
  • Sulfur

Out of all these gasses, the worst one is hydrogen sulfur. Some people have a genetic predisposition to produce a higher concentration of this gas. And for this reason, their flatulence smells far worse when compared to the others, though they don’t have any related health problems. So, the more hydrogen sulfur you produce, the worse your fart will smell.

Another “healthy” cause of foul smelling farts are carbon hydrates (when eating potatoes, bread, etc.). The problem with these carbon hydrates is that, in some case, they will not digest properly. As they remain undigested in the intestines, they will start to decompose, break down into different components and produce a particular aroma.

Which food will produce fart?

Due to its particular structure, some foods will naturally produce more gases than the rest, especially groceries that contain yeast. Two such groceries, we particularly like, are beer and wine. Unlike popular opinion, beer is not such a large “producer” of smelly farts, but wine is. Drinking a lot of wine will increase the intensity and the smell of your farts… So much so, this phenomenon is called having wine far.

Other large producers of gases are foods that contain fructose, polyol, and sulfur. If you are having stomach trouble, it is advised to avoid these foods, if you care about your loved ones and the people around you.

Here are some of these foods, we will start off with fruit:

  • Apple
  • Watermelon (though most people think it’s a vegetable)
  • Pear
  • Avocado

Vegetables that are full of fiber:

  • Onions
  • Beans (a well-known gas maker)
  • Cabbage

Mild condiments, like jams, which are filled with sugar can also put a strain on your stomach and boost gas production.

Though they are very healthy, nuts will also cause you to fart more since they are full of proteins and are a bit harder to digest. One interesting thing to note here is that if your diet is largely protein based, you will have fewer farts, but the smell will be worse. So, you need to pick your preference and balance.

If you want to fart less, you should also avoid noodles, cakes, milk and dairy products such as yogurt, cheese, and ice cream. This is due to the lactose which provokes gas production.

Now, you will probably ask yourself “What can I eat, then?!” Well, the best alternative is corn and rice.

How To Make Yourself Fart?

This is an interesting question, to say the least. When I was younger I often wondered is it possible to fart on command and how can I make myself fart. Keep in mind that this is not just a neat party trick, releasing gas can help those with stomach problems.

Well, if you are one of these people, you are in luck because I am here to tell you that yes, you can make yourself fart. You can do this in two possible ways; firstly there are steps you can take to ensure you fart more often and with more volume. And secondly, we will go over some of the positions you can try to make yourself fart right then and there.

We already mentioned some the foods which promote gas production: fruits, veggies, foods rich in sugar, carbon fibers, cereals, fatty foods, alcohol, and fizzy drinks. But now we want to go over these positions to make you fart.

Positions To Make Yourself Fart

Here are a couple of positions you can try straight away and let us know the success rate:

  1. Kneeling Position – as the name suggests, you need to kneel down and put your head on the floor. You must stretch your hands as far above the head as possible. When in this position, you need to raise your butt up and take long deep breaths. Repeat a few times, and you should make yourself fart.
  2. Sitting position – you start out by sitting on a chair. Now you need to bend over and try to reach your toes with your hand. This is a relatively useful position, but it may be difficult to do if you’ve had hip problems in the past so be careful.
  3. Hakka dance position – we will attach an image of this position for you to check out, but basically, you start out by standing up, with your feet wider than the shoulders. Next, you need to bend your knee and place your hands in front of you. You will feel the pressure in your legs and stomach and, eventually, the gas will be released.
  4. The inhale method – this is a simple method where you need to lay down on your back and pull your legs close to your chest. This is the position where your body and muscles are tense. What you need to do next is to relax your rectum completely until you fart.
  5. Baby position – if you’ve ever done yoga, you probably already know of this position. You need to lay down on your back, lift your legs up, bend the knees and grab your feet by the heels. This position is somewhat challenging, so you might want not be able to do it. Whatever you do, don’t force it.
  6. Now, if you are sick of these foods and positions, you can go the easy route and start chugging fizzy drinks. These drinks are packed full of sugar and corn syrup, and will not agree well with your stomach. Of course, this is not a good route to take if you are overweight, but if you’ve already tried everything else, go for it.
